What is an apprenticeship

All industry training and apprenticeships in British Columbia are the responsibility of the Industry Training Authority (ITA)

To work in the trades of Automotive Collision Repair Technician, Automotive Prep Technician or Automotive Painting and Refinishing Technician, you must hold a valid provincial Certificate of Qualification (TQ) or be registered as an apprentice in the province of British Columbia.

Apprenticeship is a structured system of supervised training leading to certification in a designated field.  An apprenticeship consists of on the job experience working under the supervision of an accomplished journey person.  Apprentices are released by their employers to attend industry approved training at a college, where the technical component is taught in classrooms, labs and workshops.  The technical component is 4 - 5 weeks per year.  Vancouver Community College, Broadway Campus is the designated technical training facility in the lower mainland for Automotive Collision Repair Technician, Automotive Prep Technician, and Automotive Painting and Refinishing Technician.

Apprentices are responsible for their own registration.
To register, contact Barbara Dyer at  604 871-7041 or e-mail
bdyer@vcc.ca

On completion of your schooling, you will qualify to write the inter-provincial exam. This allows you to work anywhere in Canada.

Wages
Apprentices are paid wages during their on the job training.  Once indentured in to the program, an apprentice can expect to earn 50% of a journey persons wage with yearly increases over the duration of the apprenticeship.  Apprentices are eligible for Employment Insurance while attending classes at colleges.

How To Become An Apprentice
The process of becoming enrolled as a formal apprentice is called the "indentureship" process.  To become an apprentice, you must first find suitable employment in your chosen trade before the indentureship process begins.  Gaining employment is the responsibility of the prospective apprentice.  Most people first complete the Entry Level Trades Training (ELTT) at Vancouver Community College before searching for suitable employment.  This may soon be a prerequisite. Many are able to secure employment before the end of the course.  If you register as an apprentice within one year of completing your Automotive Collision Repair ELTT, you may receive credit for up to one year of the Apprenticeship.

You must become registered through your employer in order to access the apprenticeship program.
